Phoenix to Rocky Point- 212 miles, approx. 4 hours
Driving to Rocky Point is an easy and pleasant 4 hour trip.  There are two possible routes listed below if leaving from the Phoenix area, as well as directions from Tucson & San Diego.

From Phoenix, Route # 1:
Travel west on I-10 (towards California) through Buckeye, Arizona, to Exit 112.  Taking Exit 112 heads south to State Route 85 towards Gila Bend.  37 miles to Gila Bend. Continue west through Gila Bend to the last right hand turn before the McDonald's.  (it is marked “Mexico and SR 85 South.”  Now you are
heading south on Route 85 to Ajo.  40 Miles to Ajo.  (Clean restrooms at both the Chevron and Shell gas stations in Ajo)

Continuing south out of Ajo on the same SR 85 you pass through Why, Arizona.  10 miles to Why.  Continue south from Why through the Organ Pipe National Monument on SR 85 to the Mexico Border and the town of Lukeville. (approximately 30 miles from Why to the border.) At the border crossing you will pass through a set of lights; green light is go and a red light means you need to pull over for a brief inspection. This is to see what kind of things you are bringing into the country. They will probably open doors and/ or trunks so be polite and cooperative and you should be on your way in no time. 

 

You are now in the town of Sonoyta.  You will come up to a 3 way stop approx. 2 miles ahead.  Stay to the left towards Puerto Penasco/Santa Ana.  Do Not go West toward San Luis.  Cross over the Rio Sonoyta Bridge and stay to the right at the Y in the road (a few hundred yards).  This road is Mexico Route 8 to Puerto Penasco.  The road is a well maintained  2 lane road for the next  62 miles to Rocky Point.  Be aware  of livestock that may wander onto the road due to no fencing along roadside.

From Phoenix, Route #2:
Take I-10 south out of Phoenix towards Tucson.  Take Maricopa Rd. Exit off of I-10.  Proceed towards Maricopa, Arizona.  Before reaching Maricopa, there will be an Exit (right hand turn only) onto State Route 238 (to Mobile,Arizona) Head West on SR 238 for 32 miles.  SR 238 will end at the west end of Gila Bend at SR 85.  Continue west through Gila Bend to the last right hand turn before the McDonald's.  (it is marked “Mexico and SR 85 South. “  Now you are heading south on Route 85 to Ajo.  40 Miles to Ajo.  (Clean restrooms at both the Chevron and Texaco gas stations in Ajo) Continuing south out of Ajo on the same SR 85 you pass through Why, Arizona.  10 miles to Why.
